28 DAYS LATER [2002] Noah Huntley ; Rated 18 A plague has struck the UK and it's population with 99% of folk either dead or living proof that anger management classes are always a good idea. The living infected basically go into constant state of rage attacking anyone or anything they can find. It's an intriguing piece of film making but is let down by some frankly un-realistic parts to the story. One of them being, the speed at which the infection takes over a persons body, that and a couple of other things I found a little unbelievable which ultimately hampered my enjoyment of the movie. However what the film lacks in realism, it makes up for in shock factor. Seeing London's streets completely deserted is very powerful and moving, but no doubt the traffic free roads will be a satisfying site to anyone who has had the mis-fortune of trying to drive through the usually congested city. Another attempt to muster emotion out of the viewer comes when you see the whole of Manchester a blaze from the distance, though in my case the emotion was more of joy filled glee, especially when you knew Salford was more than likely up in flames as well. Putting the visual aspect to one side though the film is well paced and directed in an exceptionally original way. The soft camera lenses, used more noticeable at the beginning of the film, really give the film character and emphasise the fact that to most, such events and sights are only experienced by the delusional. If your in for scare, then 28 Days Later is the one to see, but if you want a less apocalyptic trip to the cinema, then perhaps something a little more main stream would be in order.
