JOHNNY ENGLISH [2003]
Rowan Atkinson ; Rated PG Picking up where the old Barclay card ad's left off, Rowan Atkinson returns as the completely clueless and fumbling British spy, along with his less-adept side-kick 'Boff'. 'Johnny English' in the run up to it's cinematic release surprisingly received a considerable amount of media attention. This clearly seems to have done no small favour for the movie, as on it's opening weekend it was leading the board at most cinemas around the country, ahead of such films like Vin Diesel's 'A Man Apart' to name just one. Perhaps this means modern cinemagoers do actually have a bit of taste after all. However even though this latest spy-spoof seems to have got most peoples attention, for me in some areas, it failed to prove it self when finally its cards hit the table. Atkinson however is of course very enjoyable to watch and having John Malcovich as his characters evil nemesis only serves to boost the movies credibility. It's just I found the plot a little too naive even for a spoof. Obviously the main idea for the film is having Atkinson's character run around making a complete ass of himself, I feel though that without an even semi-believable plot and supporting characters to back this up, a lot of the sharp thrills of seeing such happenstances are lost. Maybe I'm being too critical, I don't know, but in my opinion that was what let the film down. 'Johnny English' though, with all that being said, will keep you entertained for it's duration as our hero haplessly goes from creating one fowl up to the next. But if you were looking for a movie which was built on less trodden on foundations, then you might want to look else where.
