ANGER MANAGEMENT [2003] Adam Sandler, Jack Nicholson ; R 15 An unlikely pairing to say the least, but for the most part Sandler and Nicholson do actually work quite well together as a comedy duo. This however is really the only good thing the film has got going for itself. The problem is you see, even though this is probably one of Sandler's best films, it just isn't as appealing as his previous more low budget churn outs (like 'Mr. Deeds' and 'Happy Gilmore') because the film lacks the full on goof ball simplicity which makes him usually so watch able. In 'Anger Management' Sandler is sadly way too restrained and as a result the whole film feels off balance. Credit does however go to Nicholson as he is the one who keeps the film chugging along, but without the usual full on in your face spark which Sandler's usual characters create, the movie just can't get past 2nd base. Of course though this Sandler production does come packed with the typical goodies, most his usual supporting cast are in place and a surprise cameo by Woody Harrelson adds and extra layer of icing, but even after all the expected is delivered, the film simply lacks flare. Throughout the film there were so many missed opportunities, which if they had been exploited, could have perhaps elevated the film to a more fulfilling level of sophistication. But unfortunately though the opportunities are missed and the level of sophistication stays just below average. It's not half bad and it's certainly not boring, but you will feel a little disappointed once the end credits start to role, which ultimately isn't the way I want you to leave the cinema. So no stamp of approval for this one, better luck next time Adam. 2/5 |
