ANITA AND ME
[2002] Chandeep
Uppal, Meera Syal ; Rated 12A Following in the footsteps of movies like 'East is East' and 'Bend it like Beckham', 'Anita and Me' is another addition to the recent flurry of films dealing with the trials and tribulations of living in and amongst the UK's Asian community from both sides of border. Written by Meera Syal this comedy drama set in the 70's gives us an intriguing peak into the life of Meena (Chandeep Uppal) the young daughter of the only Punjabi family in a small English village. It is essentially Uppal who makes the movie, with her unique comedic style and considering this is her big screen debut she does brilliantly. The movie itself maintains the right balance of drama, seriousness and karma for it to be very enjoyable and consistent through out, but it's subject matter simply may not appeal to everyone. I don't think this is because people wouldn't be interested by this movie, it's just for Friday night thrills this isn't the most obvious choice. Nevertheless 'Anita and Me' is perfectly entertaining throughout and is a worthy addition to British cinema but it is probably more suited to the small screen than the silver.
