BAD COMPANY [2002] Anthony Hopkins, Chris Rock ; Rated 12

Chris Rock tries his hand with action to mixed effects. You have trouble getting to grips with his character (a street bum turned CIA undercover agent). This is partly a result of the fish out of water feeling you get when watching Rock in a role like this, a role which hasn't got him playing pro-dominantly comedy. This uncertainty about his character however isn't a result of Rocks acting abilities, he does a good job for the most part. Hopkins is of course very watchable but the interactions between his character and Rock's don't quite add up. When watching them on screen you feel like something is missing from the pan. This whole 'not quite sure if it works' feel is however the only thing which really lets the film down. The action is well paced and the films story, even though full of holes and clichéd to hell and back, does give the film an edge which keeps you watching. This film could of been better if more thought had gone into the casting. Bad Company hasn't got it's foot firmly on the cinematic ground, but it is holding it's weight. Perfectly watchable and funny in parts but not something you should go out of your way to see.
