BRUCE ALMIGHTY [2003] Jim Carrey, Jennifer Aniston ; R 12A

Finally the king of gurn returns to his roots with this highly enjoyable fantasy comedy. The film is directed by Tom Shadyac (who also directed Carrey's smash hit 'Liar Liar'), who really does know how to bring the best out of his lead. Carrey is undeniably fantastic and after the recent box office flop 'The Majestic' it's nice to see a favourite comedy actor back doing what he does best. Carrey is Bruce Nolan, a down on his luck reporter who thinks god holds a grudge against him. So to prove him wrong the almighty (played by Morgan Freeman) decides to grant Bruce all of his powers. As you can imagine a flurry of very amusing sequences follows. The movie does have its problems though, the films middle section really does drag. Mainly down to the unnecessarily odd plot development which the film goes through. As a result that section of the movie doesn't quite produce as many laughs as I had of hoped. All that being said though, the film is always entertaining even at it's worst. This is primarily down to good performances all round by the cast, with credit going to Aniston who is really proving herself to be quite an actress. All in all this is a must see film, if only just for the opportunity to see Carrey once again showing us how big his comedic muscles really are. 'Bruce Almighty' is a welcomed return to form for its lead and is probably one of the best comedies so far this year. Definitely worth a look.
