BULLET PROOF MONK [2003] Chow Yun-Fat ; R 12A

'A watchable but naive 100 minutes', would be the words I would put forward to describe this martial arts action comedy. Seann William Scott ('Stifler' from the American Pie movies) straight away proves he can do more than goof ball comedy, though I might add he's not quite at Oscar level just yet. Chow Yun-Fat is always very watchable and he doesn't seemed at all troubled by the more relaxed tone this movie has, even though his past works (in general) have been quite straight in comparison. The story revolves around a nameless monk (Chow Yun-Fat) who has sworn to protect a powerful and sacred scroll. Basically the monk wants to find himself a replacement protectorate for the scroll, which is where Seann William Scott's character 'Karl' comes in. The movie isn't half bad if your a fan of this type of genre nonsense but as an individual cinematic work, it has a lot of trouble standing up by it self. I personally enjoyed the movie, even though it is fatally flawed in many areas. I predict though that most people won't be as easily taken in by it. This movie should have really gone straight to video, as it really can't cut it on the big screen. Enough said.
