DAREDEVIL [2002] Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner ; Rated 15

With more and more comic book hero's being beefed up for the big screen you couldn't blame someone for being a bit sceptical about how long Hollywood's current trend will last. But at least in Daredevil's case a.k.a Matt Murdock, he has nothing to worry about. Hot on the heels of last years summer smash 'Spiderman' this much darker more gritty take on another famous Stan Lee creation without a doubt, is great. Affleck is well cast as the not so fumbling hero and surprisingly does justice to the character, which of course should please die hard comic book fans. The films slightly non-linear structure, works well, even if it's a little predictable, and the action sequences are extremely well handled and unique in their own right. The films special effects which actually dominate the action sequences, though nothing revolutionary, play a very important role in the films greatness. As to try and convince the audience that a blind man (all be it a slightly mutated one) can actually do all the things he can, the audience needs to be put in Daredevil's shoes so they can get a better idea of how he works. This is why using CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) to create and show the audience our hero's world of sound and smell, is paramount to believing and understanding how he pulls off the amazing feats he performs. Having that kind of insight in to any character can only be a good thing, and in this case it wonderfully illustrates the super-ness of this superhero. Unlike with Spiderman and Superman, who's abilities our very obvious and on the surface, making Daredevil successfully come alive on the big screen relied on the directors ability to give this super hero the same basic dimensions as his fellow comic book buddies, for which he does with aplomb. The film is expertly made all round and even though the final showdown between Daredevil and his arch rival Kingpin could have been better, this almost gothic venture for the man who knows no fear is definitely worth seeing. Oh and did I forget to mention... Jennifer Garner is in it!
