EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS [2002] David Arquette ; Rated 12 If you don't like spiders, this film shouldn't be a worry to you. The eight legged villains in this zany araq attack, are about as realistic as a rubber egg. Firstly, the film is rated 12 so the gore levels are very low. As a result, if you were hoping for gritty carnage then you will be heavily disappointed. The movie is basically about an army of mutated spiders attacking and capturing every living thing in sight. Of course all this takes place in a small remote town on the American frontier, which of course is totally original (Tremors anyone). Arquette proves once and for all that he can only play one character, by languishing in Douey impressions (his character in the Scream trilogy) throughout. This movie also sheds new light on spiders, you see up until I saw this film I was under the impression the arachnid kind couldn't speak! However I was proven wrong many times throughout the 117minutes when the eight legged ones stopped to say 'Owh', 'eh oh' (to quote just a couple) as well as the constant giggling they do when chasing their prey. This warped reality was obviously enough to make a few people in the audience titter but for me and the rest, my head was in my hands. All that being said though, the film is nicely directed and edited well enough to keep the movie flowing nicely. It is let down solely by it's premise and it's male lead. It's better than Arachnophobia, but only because it hasn't got Jeff Daniels in it. Is it worth a trip to the cinema?... only if you live in one.
