K19 [2002] Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson ; Rated 12A

Harrison Ford is well known for being choosey about the films he makes and I think this is why you will struggle to find a real stinker anywhere on his CV. Ford is one of the most versatile actors around, he can do action movies, romantic comedies, science fiction (Blade Runner), political thrillers and of course the hardest of them all, Star Wars. A man who can successfully pull off all of the above should be commended and 'K19' only adds to the fact that he deservers a royal pat on the back. His latest movie which he stars in along side Liam Neeson, sees him take on the role of a Russian sub-marine Captain during the start of the cold war. 'K19' is a brand spanking new nuclear submersible for which Fords character has to take command of. His mission, to launch a Nuclear test missile to show the Americans that Russia is very capable of retaliating in the event of a nuclear attack. This is based on a true story where an accident happens onboard which puts K19's Captain in a tricky situation, save his crew from lethal radiation or stay loyal to his country by keeping his vessel from the Americans at all costs. With that dilemma and the constant risk of an nuclear melt down onboard the story contains more twists and turns than a broken boomerang. The movie at its core though is basically about paying tribute to the hero's who gave their lives in the accident. Considering the amount of movies that get churned out from America depicting the U.S as being the saviours of everything and everyone else as the clean cut enemy, this Hollywood export is a welcomed change. I sense though Harrison Ford himself had a lot to do with this film staying true to the story and for that he at the very least deserves you to go and see it. It's an action packed thoroughly enjoyable 137minutes with some excellent performances all round. Not to be missed.
