MURDER BY NUMBERS [2002] Sandra Bullock, Ben Chaplin, Ryan Gosling ; Rated 15

A calm but nevertheless entertaining psychological thriller. Bullock puts in a believable performance as the self-tormented detective trying to solve a murder. The presence of some young talent (the two psychotics) adds a surprising realism to the feel of the movie which is very refreshing for a tiring genre. You do in some parts of the movie actually expect Morgan Freeman to walk in and solve the case in a glance, but that obviously doesn't happen and though the film does border, on occasion, into clichéd territory it smoothly swerves to avoid getting pinned down by it. The story is good which is what drives the film nicely through the whole 130 odd minutes. The direction is very minimalistic but nevertheless very well done and the handling of the Bullocks tormented sub plot especially works well. The film doesn't bring anything new to the genre but it certainly doesn't take anything away. It's a nice time filler and for Bullock fans definitely something to check out. In a nutshell, the film is very Volvo like, nothing flashy but nevertheless efficient and powerful.
