NARC [2003] Ray Liotta, Jason Patric ; R 18

This film is essentially the real worlds response to 'Training Day', a film which even though at the time, seemingly down and gritty, now seems more pumped up on sugar, than realism. This is where 'Narc' contrasts, it's a more honest, more fair, more believable take on the whole dirty cop thing, with all round excellent performances by Jason Patric ('Speed 2') and Ray Liotta. The film has a very raw feeling to it, and it is this factor, that admittedly drives the films story home. The story itself revolves around an investigation into the alleged murder of a undercover narcotics officer, which even though on paper, seems to be a less than curious premise, really turns out to be a superb method of allowing story and character to work in almost perfect unison with each other. The only down side to the film is simply that it is very dark, very very dirty and not at all like 'Training Day', in the manner that things aren't as in your face and things aren't handed to you on a plate. This you might say is a good thing, but to the average Joe Blockbuster, it may seems a bit trying. Nevertheless, a great film, with great performances.
