ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO [2003] Antonio Banderas ; R 15

'Once Upon A Time In Mexico' is the third film of the El Mariachi series, Desperado being the most well known of the previous two films. This third instalment brings us simply more of the same, with Salma Hayhek only really appearing for a couple of minutes in total. However, it may just be a rehash of things past, but one thing that is different, is the addition of Johnny Depp to the cast. It is he who really drives the film and it is he, that in all honestly steals the show from Antonio Banderas. So thankfully Mr Depp makes up for any inherent short comings the second sequel exhibits, which makes this film standard, but entertaining stuff. I won't bother telling you about the plot, because it is hardly the driving force behind the movie, and director Robert Rodriquez makes no effort to hide that fact, so if he isn't that bothered, why should I be. Guns go bang, guitars twiddle away and Depp and Hayek provide plenty of eye candy, what more could you want from a film? Well okay... a lot more, but there is something to be said for a film that openly admits it's all about loud bangs, rather than deep and meaningful scripts. A worthy addition to the series, but most definitely the weakest link.
