I first set my ears on Avril Lavigne when I just happened to catch the video for her now hit single 'Complicated' on MTV over the summer. Straight away I decided to order her album to see if the rest of her music lived up to the high standard set by this first single, and low and behold, it did. The album in question is called 'Let Go' and it is full of great music writing. Avril, being such a great vocalist, can just as easily sing up beat full on rock tracks as she can downbeat ballads and it is this, paired with the uniquely sharp but also soft tone of her voice, that makes me think she is going to go all the way. All the way being... on to her next album. I can't help compare this only 18 year old skater chick with such artists like Alanis Morissette who Avril shares a distinct similarity with in at the very least her style of vocal delivery. Like with the last band looked at in this section 'The Calling' she caught my attention quite some time before she did the rest of the UK public, but again like the 'The Calling' (who also made it big first in the U.S), the UK charts are now her stomping ground. 'Let Go' is a brilliantly crafted debut album, it's very easy to listen to and even though her song lyrics might not appeal to everyone, the albums tunes are immediately likeable and very consistent in terms of their stylistic grounding. So basically if you liked the 1st single off the album, you will almost certainly enjoy the rest of it. Don't get me wrong it's not boring and all the same one track after the next, it is just a level of production, arranging and instrumentation which stands its ground throughout it's running time assuring some of the more stylistically far reaching songs don't end up being the odd ones out. After having her album on my shelf for a couple of weeks I stumbled across some recordings of her performing live in some acoustic sessions for AOL. For a lot of artists, singing in the studio is a lot different than it is when performing live, she however made the distinction blur into one vocal entity. She loses no clarity and energy in the transition and in some cases I found her live work to be even more compelling than the actual album it self. So there you have it... I suggest you buy her album straight away and see what I'm talking about. Avril Lavigne is certainly the rock chick of the moment and if my suspicions are correct, the future as well. I have posted the below track from her acoustic AOL live performances for you to listen to, so download and enjoy. 'Things I'll Never Say' So that's about it for this particular look at what's new in the world of rock, so until next time. Don't forget to listen to a bit of rock everyday, whether it be Bon Jovi or Queen, it doesn't matter... just make sure it's rock and remember If Avril Lavigne can look cool and rock at the same time, then so can all of you! |
