SERENDIPITY [2001]
John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale ;
Rating 12 Good romantic comedies are pretty hard to come by these days, which is why this little effort is worth seeing. It doesn't by any means do anything too original but the new spin it does have is a good one. Basically a story about two people who meet by chance and fall in love in a day, but then decide if it was meant to be, then they would meet again in a magical twist of fate. I think you can see where I am going with this... it's fun to watch mainly because of John Cusack's usual acerbic performances and active interactions with the rest of the casts characters. Kate Beckinsale is much more down to earth than you would expect (especially after Pearl Harbour) and is of course genuinely comforting eye candy (this is from a guys perspective I might add, for girls then just swap the two performance analyses of the leads around). The key to this films success is, your not exactly sure how they will end up together, you know they will, but these small but nevertheless important unpredictability's in the story makes the film what it is. Ideal for a late night in with the Mrs or Mr, Serendipity is a definite well balanced breath of fresh air into a tiring genre, it's worth a look. 3/5 |
