TEARS OF THE SUN
[2003]
Bruce Willis, Monica Belluci
;
R 15 Bruce Willis heads up this down to earth war movie, which was slightly over looked upon its original UK release. I mean, it isn't ground breaking, or for that matter all that inspiring, but it is far from the underwhelming piece of cinema many critics made it out to be. The story is a simple one, obey orders or obey your morality, something which I think on the one hand is a very un-original primary plot header, but on the other, something that is often never dealt with in that much depth. This movie, at the very least, does try to take a more serious and realistic standpoint on that kind of dilemma, though it has to be said, the end result is far from in your face. Which is essentially where the film falls down, it lacks conviction. It doesn't properly put across what its trying to achieve, which results in a slightly "what's the point" kind of feeling in certain places. 'Willis also plays it a little too gruff, his same old same old trademark frown, just seems a little drab for the material at hand. This unfortunately is another factor which plays against the movie as a whole. Nevertheless, it is perfectly watchable and if you're willing to pick up the slack emotionally, then you'll probably find this quite an enjoyable piece of warfare. However, don't expect anything out of the ordinary.
