The Calling are a powerful new LA band that draws on its decadent Southern California roots to make their music defiantly upbeat and unsettlingly intimate. Fuelled by the song writing of guitarist Aaron Kamin and lead singer Alex Band, The Calling's debut album Camino Palmero is one of the most auspicious debuts for a rock band in a long time. The album is produced by Marc Tanner, with eight tracks mixed by the legendary Chris Lord-Alge, the new album serves up an astringent view of love and loss, rejection, redemption and not to mention (what a rhyme) rock!

By now most people in the UK should have heard of these guys, as this summer the radio stations have been giving their first single release  'Wherever you will go' a lot of air play. MTV has been playing their video by request, dozens of times a day and they have also performed live on Top of the Pops and at a couple of festivals. Some people might say that's an impressive debut and they would be right, but unknown to most, they didn't just form and then jump on a plane to the UK, oh no.

This time last year I had just by chance, heard one of their songs which was used as a backing track for a Star Trek : Enterprise trailer which had just debuted in the states. I immediately loved the song which was called 'Wherever you will go' (as mentioned) and looked on Amazon for the album it came off. With luck, I found 'Camino Palmero' the album and ordered it. Within a few days I received the album and to my joy I found it to be excellent. I must have been one of the first people in the UK to hear this band and own their album which at the time had a feeling would be successful. So back to 2002 and here they are, in the UK. Reaching I think number 3 in our charts.

Their music has a great atmosphere and warmth about it, something that in the modern music industry seems to be quite rare. Their music clearly depicts the amount of heart and soul they put into their music and that is the main factor I think which makes it special. The guitar motifs and harmonic structures are well thought out and definitely original in their own right and Alex Band's voice is something which has to be heard to be believed. He may look like a choir boy but when he starts to sing the rock acoustical persona which is created oozes of uniqueness.

These guys are genuinely a batch of fresh rock talent and hopefully they will gain the success they deserve, I employ all folk who have heard their single to go out and buy the album (or download it... cough cough) you won't be disappointed. Also, next time you hear on the radio or TV someone say "...and now here's The Calling...", stop what you are doing and listen.
