THE HULK [2003] Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Nick Nolte ; R 12A

Well it seems the green man is back, this time in full CGI. After seeing the trailer for this film and with this being yet another Hollywood big screen comic book adaptation, I was a little apprehensive to say the least. I mean lets face it, the Hulk himself, in the original trailer, looked about as life like as a telli-tubby. A fact that does actually mis-represent the finished film, but also a fact that does also support my own personal problems with the movie. Ang Lee ('Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon') takes on the task of helming this very ambitious piece of film making and makes sure his presence is significantly felt. This is one of the good attributes the movie has, its direction. It's directed exceptional well and as a result turns out to be one of the most intriguing comic book adaptations to have ever been made. It's dark, psychological and intelligent, but at the same time slightly silly and well... comic book like, which in itself is a remarkable achievement for Lee. The film though, even with its director trying his hardest, does fail to fill its own shoes. 'The Hulk' was always going to be a challenging project, and the standards Lee sets himself doesn't help make the task any easier. This all results in the movie being slightly un-successful when depicting certain parts of the story, the finale being the most noticeable instance. However the main problem is, no matter how hard you try to see the totally CGI Hulk as real, you just can't except it on any level. Don't get me wrong, this film really does boast some excellent live action CGI interactions, but for me, the Hulk needed more work, or more to the point, more time. I feel the not so jolly green giant was more limited by the current computer graphics and animation technology than anything else. Having said all that, it does remain to be, a very interesting movie and it would probably be worthy of four stars, if it wasn't for that fact that I feel not many people will be as entertained by it, as they might have expected to be. A little disappointing, not because the movie is bad, but because it doesn't quite manage to fulfil its own potential.
