THE MAJESTIC [2001] Jim Carrey ; Rated PG Jim Carrey once again side steps away from his trade mark comedy performances to play a pleasantly downbeat Sunday afternoon drama about false accusations, truth, honour and most importantly hope. Carrey plays Peter Appleton a Hollywood screen writer who has everything going for him, until of course the FBI blacklist him because of alleged involvement with communist supporters. Drunk and desperate, Peter drives aimlessly through the streets of California until he finally crashes and as a result loses his memory. He wakes up to find himself with a new life for which he embraces as his own, that is until he starts to realise this new life he is is leading, isn't actually his. 'The Majestic', like 'Man on the Moon' is an underrated movie which showcases Carrey's acting talents without being somewhat masked by his usual comedic performances. The film is well polished and apart from a few minor lags in pace, fills it's 146 minutes length with warm and well scripted dialogue and an excellent supporting cast to boot. It might not suit everyone's tastes, but for fans of 'The Shawshank Redemption' and 'The Green Mile' this is perfectly entertaining stuff. 'The Majestic' is out to buy or rent now.
