TICKER [2001]
Tom Sizemore, Dennis Hopper and
Steven Seagal ; Rated 15 Strangely the poster on the left headlines some unknown actor called NAS, which is bizarre because he only has about 1 minute of screen time in this film. Where as the more obviously choice to be on the poster would have been Dennis Hopper as he plays one of the films main characters, no less the bad guy. This film desperately wants to be a bigger movie, Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan, Heat) is a capable actor as so is obviously Dennis Hopper (notice I didn't mention Seagal). The main thing which stops it becoming 'not that bad' is the dialogue, which is terrible throughout. It also doesn't help matters having a supporting cast list which could perform brain surgery better than they could act (presuming none of them are brain surgeons in their spare time). This NAS fellow is a prime example, his death scene at the start is a joke. All that being said though Albert Pyun (Cyborg, Urban Menace) does a surprisingly adequate job of directing, the film is well paced and the action scenes (which there are many), though not very adventurous, suitably keeps the 100 minutes chugging along nicely. This is probably his best film to date, but he is let down by a shaky plot and shaky performances. Seagal is his usual self, playing a character which doesn't quite sit in the realms of reality. One minute he's a bomb disposal expert, next a councillor, then a martial arts wizard. I didn't buy it, and I don't thing anyone else will either. It's watchable, and funny in parts, though sadly, not intentionally. I am not even going to bother telling you what the film is about, because the rule is, if it doesn't matter to the director, it certainly isn't going to matter to us the viewers. So if you've seen everything else then Ticker's for you, if not... watch Jerry Springer. 2/5
