TOMB RAIDER
: THE CRADLE OF LIFE
[2003]
Angelina Jolie ;
R 12A In a nutshell, this second outing for Lara Croft is just as distressing as the first, a film without heart, soul and energy. How two films got made like this is beyond me, especially considering the leading talent for which is Angelina Jolie. She tries her best to make something out of the film, but she sadly just hasn't got anything to work with. On the up side though, the action isn't overly bad, and of course the leading lady is as curiously gorgeous as always and the films overall structure and pacing is another element in its favour. However even though some good buttons are pressed, they just don't count for anything without a half descent story. The story being one revolving around the rather underwhelming object known as Pandora's Box, something which I imagine readers of the old Adrian Mole books might find quite amusing. To cut a crap story short, our heroin just has to try and find this legendary box before the bad guys do, so she can obviously save the world and once again fulfil her peculiar and quite frankly contradictory curiosity into rare and dusty objects. All in all, the film turned out to be one of the biggest stinkers of the year, and eventhough I doubt anyone expected it to be anything but that, it still leaves a lather of frustration on your tongue, especially giving the fact that the character does show flashes of potential greatness. Sadly, the rug once more is pulled out from underneath the character, and we can't help but conclude this will be Lara's last chance to make it big on the er... big screen. Tomb Raider 3? I very much doubt it!
