TWO WEEKS NOTICE [2002] Hugh Grant, Sandra Bullock ; 12A

The search for a totally original romantic comedy doesn't unfortunately stop here, but 'Two Weeks Notice' does do credit to the already well established rom-com formula. The pairing of Bullock and Grant wasn't the most obvious of partnerships, but they do surprisingly work well together with both their unique comedic styles managing to spark laughs in all the right places. The story, which revolves round Grant's character falling in love without actually knowing it, is refreshingly unique, but the films direction and screenplay in all honesty doesn't do the premise justice. As a result of this you will probably feel a little short changed at the end of the movie. What the film really needed was a more adventurous director, someone who was willing to throw away some of the established principals associated with the genre and really try and do something different with the material. However that didn't happen and all the film got was Mr. Run-of-the-mill (Marc Lawrence) to see it through to the big screen, and even though 'Two Weeks Notice' is better than most, it's not half as good as it could have been. All that being said though, it's still the best thing to see come Valentines day, short of taking your partner to see 'Dare Devil' and like I said, it does press all the right buttons, it just doesn't bring anything new to the genre.
