X-MEN 2 [2003]
Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart ;
R 12A Low and behold, a sequel that not only does justice to the original, but surpasses it in many ways... don't believe it? Well it was certainly a pleasant surprise for me, and I imagine there will be big hoorays from comic book stores all around the globe as the news spreads that 'X-MEN 2' is a winner. Was there really any doubt? Well no, not really. The first movie honourably did justice to the original comic books, and this film carries on that trend by staying as true to it's foundation as possible. This unfortunately does have the side-effect of making newbie's to the whole mutant thing have to think that little bit harder while watching the film. Also, it really helps if you've seen the first one, as 'X-MEN 2' is more of a continuance of the original rather than a re-visit. Apart from that though 'X-MEN 2' delivers all the goods and this time it seems director Bryan Singer has finally hit the nail on the head by creating a smooth and unique special effects extravaganza, a film which some people might say he fell a little short of with the original. So yes, this movie is better than it's predecessor, that's not knocking the first film, it's just trying to illustrate how much better this one is. The story this time around is about certain individuals trying to start a war between the humans and their mutated cousins, and it's up to the X-MEN to put a stop to it. The film also contains some very dense sub-plots which really fill out the 130minutes running time. Unlike with the real thing, this burger is just as good as the one you see in the advertisements. Large, succulent and full of flavour. Can't wait for 'X-MEN 3', and I'm not even into comic books. What does that say? 4/5 |
